Former Rostov Region construction minister Bezuglov taken into custody
According to investigators, he replaced the sand type with a cheaper one when preparing the stadium for the World Cup.
The Leninsky District Court of Rostov-on-Don took the former Minister of Construction of the Rostov Region, Nikolay Bezuglov, suspected of abuse of authority, into custody until May 28, TASS reports. Due to the ex-official’s connivance, the improvement contractor at the Rostov-Arena stadium replaced top sand sand with cheaper fine sand.
At the request of Bezuglov’s lawyer the trial was held behind closed doors. The ex-official was sent to a pre-trial detention facility for two months, as well as the second defendant - the director of the contractor company called Rostovoblstroyzakazchik, Sergey Mishchenko. The damage they caused was estimated at 223 million rubles ($ 3,4 million).
As Bezuglov said at the hearing, he is now working at the MKTs Roseurodevelopment LLC, which built the five-star Hyatt Regency Don-Plaza-Rostov congress hotel in Rostov-on-Don for the 2018 World Cup. However, the hotel was later excluded from the championship preparation program.
The detention is related to the investigation into the abduction and murder of Tatyana Sidorova, a deputy of the Ramenskoye District Legislature, and three members of her family, which occurred back in 2012.
