Former Deputy Governor of Khabarovsk Territory arrested in case of billionth theft
Vasily Shikhalev is suspected of allocating a subsidy of more than 1 billion rubles to one of the logging companies.
In Khabarovsk, former Deputy Governor of the region Vasily Shikhalev was arrested for two months on suspicion of involvement in large-scale fraud in the forestry sector, Interfax reports. The Central District Court placed Shikhalev into custody until May 17.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation reports that from October 2013 to September 2018, the official responsible for the forest industry and the implementation of priority investment projects in the field of forest development provided protection to the logging company headed by his acquaintance.
During the audit, the Prosecutor General’s Office in the Far Eastern Federal District found that the organization illegally received grants in the amount of more than 1 billion rubles from the federal budget, and unlawfully cut down forests worth more than 9 million rubles.
A criminal case has been initiated under Exceeding Official Powers (Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and Swindling (Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
Earlier, sources reported that the government of the Khabarovsk Territory was raided within the case of large-scale embezzlement in the forest industry. It was said that the inspection was initiated by Governor Sergey Furgal. The audit covered the activities of officials from the team of the previous Governor.
Presumably, it concerns the US response to Ukraine’s help in the investigation against Joseph Biden, Trump’s main rival in the 2020 presidential election, who allegedly was in collusion with Kiev during the previous campaign.
