Dagestan: damage from gas theft amounted to $22.5m

Illegal pipeline hookup is common for the Republic.

Unknown persons in the Republic of Dagestan stole gas for a total of about 1.5 billion rubles. Such data was reported by a representative of Makhachkala Gazprom Gas Distribution as a result of an audit of 10 months of 2018. Materials are handed over to law enforcement.

“For ten months of the current year, 4321 applications have been filed with law enforcement agencies, including 529 against legal entities. The total amount of damage claimed during this period amounted to 1 billion 489 million rubles ($22.5m),” TASS quotes representative of the company Khadizhat Magomedrasulova.

According to her, 150 criminal and 441 administrative cases were initiated, the company is awaiting the decision of law enforcement agencies on more than three thousand applications.

Magomedrasulova explained multiple embezzlements by illegal connection to the pipeline - the so-called hookups. The company, together with government agencies, regularly conducts raids to detect such violations.

On November 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Government and the Prosecutor General's Office to take measures to identify, prevent and suppress the theft of gas, oil and oil products in Dagestan, which has become widespread. A report on the work done has to be presented in the spring of 2019.
