He has been hiding from investigation for over 20 years and was detained only in 2017.
Italian mafia Rocco Morabito, one of the bosses of the Calabrian mafia Ndrangheta, and three other prisoners escaped from the Uruguayan prison. They robbed an apartment in a nearby building and disappeared.
According to TASS with reference to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the South American Republic, Morabito was to be deported to Italy in the coming months at the request of the authorities of a European country. He is accused of drug trafficking.
Morabito is considered the most wanted member of the Calabrian mafia Ndrangheta. He has been hiding from investigation for over 20 years and was detained only in 2017. Since then, he has been waiting for extradition to Italy. It is believed that Ndrangheta controls up to 80 percent of drug trafficking in the EU.
