Ukraine: major gang headed by thief in law Sharik uncovered
The gang had operated in the territory of Crimea, Kherson, Nikolaev, Odessa and Zaporozhe regions.
The National Police of Ukraine reported about a special operation into uncovering of a criminal gang that had committed crimes in Crimea, Kherson, Nikolaev, Odessa and Zaporozhe regions.
The gang was searched for for almost a year. During this time, investigators determined that the gang had been headed by a few ’thieves in law’. During two years, they gathered dozens of millions hryvnas for a ‘thieves’ cash pool fund’.
One of the key leaders of the organized crime gang was a ‘supervisor’ of the south of Ukraine who lived in Odessa - a ‘thief in law’ known as Sharik. Kherson link of the criminal organization as under control of a leader of the regional crime field, but his name is not disclosed. He dealt with control of packing of the cash fund that was filled up with the help of theft, robbery, car theft and swindling. During two year, the amount reached 23 million hryvnas.
This money was used for the gang’s needs: in particular, for imprisonment of its members - cigarettes, food etc. Besides that, this money was used to arrange ‘conventions’, pay bribes to officials and lawyers.
Around 30 searches were carried out in the Kherson, Odessa and Zaporozhe regions. Four defendants in the case were suspected. They are accused under article (Creation of a criminal community), article 189 (Extortion) and 307 (Illegal manufacturing, purchase and selling of narcotic drugs).
