Shakro did not look up from crossword puzzle hearing his appeal got rejected
The sentence of the thief in law has been recognized as lawful.
Zakhary Kalashov’s attorney did not succeed in appealing the court’s verdict in the extortion case. The Moscow City Court upheld the decision of the lower court overturning the petition for leniency.
The meeting took place on Wednesday, November 28th. RIA Novosti reporter from the courtroom said that Shakro was deliberately looking at a crossword puzzle during the trial and did not even look up when the judge announced the refusal.
As the CrimeRussia wrote earlier, the Nikulinsky Court of Moscow placed the thief in law to a high-security penal colony for 9 years and 10 months at the end of March. Shakro's closest associate, Andrei Kochuykov (Italianets), got a term of 8 years and 9 months.
Kalashov was found guilty on two counts of extortion. There are 11 defendants in the case apart from him.
As the investigation established, the men wanted 8 million rubles from Zhanna Kim, the owner of the Elements restaurant, in mid-December 2015. Kalashov’s gang threatened her with violence and damage to her property. The defendants also extorted 10 million rubles from the CEO of a large joint-stock company between June 2015 and August 2016.
Among the defendants in the high-profile criminal case are some high-ranking officers of the Investigative Committee who were willing to get a softer verdict for Italianets in exchange for a bribe.
The Investigations Directorate in the Leningrad Region of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (ICR) is going through turbulent times. After an unexpected replacement of the supreme command, the winds of change started blowing. Colonel of justice Pavel Vymenets, the new acting head of the agency, launched personnel reshuffles. According to sources, all means are used to purge the ranks from corrupt officers, including collection of compromising materials and denunciations.
