Back to freedom: influential criminal Guli released after 20 years behind bars
At present, the Azerbaijani crime boss is in Georgia.
The influential Azerbaijani thief in law Nadir Salifov, known as Guli, was released after a long imprisonment. The information received from sources has already been confirmed in the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to publication Haqqin.az, Salifov is currently in the territory of Georgia.
Guli, for the first time convicted in 1995 for serious crimes, such as extortion, kidnapping and illegal possession of weapons, had terms being regularly added already during the incarceration. While in prison, he was 'crowned' in 2000. According to the last sentence, the term of his imprisonment was to end in February 2020. However, a source of The CrimeRussia as early as May 2017 reported that Salifov could soon be released on parole, and this is what happened.
Despite the fact that the criminal was behind bars for more than 20 years, with the help of mafia enforcers he could control businessmen (mainly representatives of the Azerbaijani expats in the neighboring countries of the former Soviet Union) and influence the lay-of-the-land in the criminal world.
