Ural: anti-corruption crusader detained for 100-thousand-ruble bribe
Ivan Balantsov, the Head of the Department of Economic Security and Countering Corruption in the Sverdlovsk region, was arrested red-handed in his office.
The special operation codenamed Zarechny was aimed to detain Ivan Balantsov, the police Major, the Head of Economic Security Department of the Russian Interior Ministry of Defense who was responsible for curbing corruption in Zarechny district. The operation was conducted by officers from security department together with the security forces from Ural security department. The information has been confirmed by the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Sverdlovsk Region.
Ivan Balantsov is believed to have been extorting a bribe offering to settle the matter with the audit of a bank. The extortion was reported by a manager of a financial institution. It was said that at a meeting with the bank’s representative that was conducted under the supervision of law enforcement officers, the suspect voiced a figure of 600 thousand rubles. On September 22 at Balantsov’s office a part of the bribe amounting to 100 thousand rubles was handed over - that was when the Police arrested the officer. The matter is being investigated.
As noted by Nina Pelevina, the official representative of the MIA Main Directorate for the Sverdlovsk Region, Ivan Balantsov does not admit his guilt and puts forward his own version of events. No details have been announced yet.
The press service said that soon Balantsov would be dismissed from the internal affairs "on negative grounds."
Valentin Zenkov, the Head of Operation and Search division for the regional police department, added that Balantsov had long been watched by the security service and his arrest is a natural process of cleansing the internal affairs of those who had betrayed the interests of the service.
However, some local politicians linked their counterparts’ interest towards Balantsov to a land fraud. The URA.ru spoke of it earlier. On August 30, 2016 in the land department and other departments of Zarechny district administration, searches were conducted for a criminal case regarding abuse of power. The case was initiated at a request by a local deputy from the Communist Party Mikhail Kovaliov. The communist complained that there had been a number of violations when the city officials were allocating the plots of land.
After scaring Dagestan with inspections, arrests, and searches, the interdepartmental commission of the Prosecutor General’s Office and ICR has identified key priorities for the regional watchdog authority. After the crackdown on the old clan-based system, the management reforms became more constructive – however, another wave of criminal cases, terminations, and arrests is expected in the republic. The CrimeRussia was figuring out what other Dagestani officials are currently at risk.
