Tax Service head for St. Petersburg’s Kurortny and Kronshtadtsky districts detained for bribe

The Head of the Interdistrict Inspectorate of the Federal Tax Service of Russia No. 12 of Kurortny and Kronshtadtsky districts of St. Petersburg, Elena Zhokun, was detained after interrogation, Fontanka writes with reference to sources.
According to the interlocutors of the publication, the official was suspected of mediating a bribe that her niece demanded from a company caught on tax violations.
In particular, according to the investigators, in total women extorted 4 million rubles ($60.1 thousand) from entrepreneurs. They promised to transfer this money to employees of the Federal Tax Service, who allegedly were to hush up the case against the company.
The entrepreneurs transferred the sum to the settlement accounts of shell companies.
Another episode concerns the requirement of another 2.5 million ($37.5 thousand) for transfer to the Interdistrict Inspectorate of the Federal Tax Service number 12 staff, but this time the suspect promised to facilitate adoption of the decision to reimburse the company value-added tax in the amount of about 25 million rubles ($375.8 thousand). A million ($15 thousand) has been transferred to the account.
According to Fontanka, during the interrogation as a witness, Elena Zhokun could not convince the investigators that she was not involved in the actions of her niece. Following the relative, she was procedurally detained for two days, convicted under Art. 290 of the Criminal Code - Bribe-Taking.
