Moscow: Federal Penitentiary Service sells senior posts
The Head of Federal Penitentiary Service Probation Department Evgeny Verbetsky and his deputy Roman Klimenko were caught red-handed.
Evgeny Verbetsky, the Head of Federal Penitentiary Service Probation Department of Russia for Moscow, and his deputy Roman Klimenko are suspected of taking a bribe from a colleague.
According to investigators, Verbetsky and Klimenko were demanding money from the Head of institution branch. In return, the suspects promised their patronage in the service and promotion. According to Fontanka, the suspects would name the prices for available positions the applicants could pay if they wanted to move up the career ladder.
Their intentions were disclosed by the agency’s security service. Verbitsky and Klimenko were detained yesterday, on November 1, while receiving a bribe of 300 thousand rubles. They were arrested in their private office in the administration building on Seleznevskaya Street.
The Federal Penitentiary Service officials were charged under part 5 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code (Bribe-Taking). Investigators filed a motion to imprison the suspects.
The prosecutors want the former Russian Federation Council member to go to prison for 14 years instead of 9 and pay a 500-million-ruble ($8.8 million) fine instead of 70 million rubles ($1.2 million).
