Investigators conduct searches in the Moscow apartment of Markelov's daughter.
The former Head of Mari El, Leonid Markelov, was detained on suspicion of taking bribes. TASS reported this citing lawyer Igor Trunov. He represents the interests of another person involved in the case - businessman Nikolay Krivashin. He and head of the Region 12 local TV channel Maria Kozhevnikov are suspected of giving bribes to Markelov. At the same time, Krivashin has not yet been detained, because he is abroad.
According to Trunov, the investigation is conducting searches in the Moscow apartment of the Mari El ex-Head's daughter and in his wife's house.
The criminal case was initiated under three articles of the Criminal Code: part 6 of Art. 290 (Bribe-Taking on an especially large scale), part 5 of Art. 291 (Bribe-Giving on an especially large scale) and Art. 291.1 (Mediation in bribery).
The decree on the release of Markelov at his request was published on April 6. He headed the Republic since January 2001. Saying goodbye to members of the republican Government, Leonid Markelov told he would like to continue his activities in the Federation Council. Alexander Evstifeev was appointed new Head of Mari El.
Yet another scandal involving Boris Dubrovsky is looming in the Chelyabinsk region. The Governor is determined to resettle Uraim and Severny Klyuch villages against the will of their residents. Kolyma Governor Sergei Nosov suggested Dubrovsky to drive the people into bright future with iron hands. In fact, the future is bright mostly for Nosov and Dubrovsky – not for the resettled villagers.
