Court prolonged arrest of former Head of Mari El until September
Leonid Markelov is accused of taking a bribe of more than 220 million rubles ($3.8m).
The Moscow Basmanny Court granted the petition of the investigation and decided to prolong the arrest of former Head of the Republic of Mari El Leonid Markelov for two months. In addition, until September 12, the alleged accomplice of ex-Governor Natalia Kozhanova will remain in custody.
"Investigative actions continue in several regions of the Russian Federation," the investigator said.
It is noteworthy that Markelov did not admit his guilt during the court session, saying that he does not understand the essence of the accusations. "During the whole period of the arrest, I saw the investigator several times - the interest of the investigation into the case is zero. The reason for this case is the persecution of Krivash by a large Russian holding, which was trying to buy its poultry factory below the market price," TASS quotes him.
Recall that businessman Nikolay Krivash, the owner of the Akashevskaya poultry farm, which, according to investigators, gave a bribe to Markelov, was previously declared an international wanted list. In addition, the investigation solicits his absentee arrest. Within the framework of the case, six real estate objects belonging to the entrepreneur were also arrested.
The Kremlin was told that they use Telegram for internal communications. However, if it is blocked, the staff of the Presidential Administration is ready to switch to another messenger, said Dmitry Peskov.
Deputy of Izhevsk Zakhar Milostivenko was detained the day before on suspicion of "restricting competition". Sources clarify that the case of the parliamentarian is connected with the criminal case of Alexander Soloviev, accused of multimillion bribes.
