Balashikha Administration official arrested for protection racket
The official was collared in the act of receiving half a million rubles.
In Balashikha (municipality in the outskirts of Moscow), law enforces detained Ilya Lezhnev, the Head of the Publicity and Funeral Services Department. The official had allegedly solicited a monthly fee of 500 thousand rubles from a businessman in return for his overall protection and no obstacles for the business.
According to some estimates, the official got half a million rubles for advertising services. Local media stress that Ilya Lezhnev was appointed to the post just recently.
The official was caught red-handed when receiving money through an intermediary on December 13, 2016. The Investigative Committee of Russia in Balashikha municipality initiated a criminal case on the grounds of the incident under part 5 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code. Ilya Lezhnev has been taken into custody.
The arrest involved the Russian Main Department of Economic Security and Countering Corruption of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA GUEBiPK) as well as the local MIA UEBiPK officers in the Moscow region.
Preliminary hearings of the case pertaining to embezzlements committed during the construction of notorious Zenit Arena haven’t commenced yet – but the trial of Marat Oganesyan already ceased to be monotonous. The former Deputy Head of the St. Petersburg Municipal Administration has directly hinted at the involvement of his successor – current Vice Governor Albin – in the embezzlement of billions of rubles.
