Balashikha Administration official arrested for protection racket
The official was collared in the act of receiving half a million rubles.
In Balashikha (municipality in the outskirts of Moscow), law enforces detained Ilya Lezhnev, the Head of the Publicity and Funeral Services Department. The official had allegedly solicited a monthly fee of 500 thousand rubles from a businessman in return for his overall protection and no obstacles for the business.
According to some estimates, the official got half a million rubles for advertising services. Local media stress that Ilya Lezhnev was appointed to the post just recently.
The official was caught red-handed when receiving money through an intermediary on December 13, 2016. The Investigative Committee of Russia in Balashikha municipality initiated a criminal case on the grounds of the incident under part 5 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code. Ilya Lezhnev has been taken into custody.
The arrest involved the Russian Main Department of Economic Security and Countering Corruption of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA GUEBiPK) as well as the local MIA UEBiPK officers in the Moscow region.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had seen plenty of scandals throughout its history. However, the IOC couldn’t even think that international drug trafficker Gafur Rakhimov, member of the criminal ‘Brothers’ Circle’ put on the OFAC’s Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List, is going to take charge of it soon. Furthermore, Rakhimov has contributed greatly to the selection of Sochi the place of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Kochkin is detained in the headquarters building and brought to the police department, where policemen drew up a protocol under Violating the Established Procedure for Arranging or Conducting a Meeting, Rally, Demonstration, Procession or Picket (part 8 of Article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). According to the activist, in the near future he will go on trial.
